JNF is involved in the spirit of the Negev through partnerships in the Southern Arava. JNF's helping hand is now extended into three primary kibbutzim: Lotan, Yahel and Ketura. JNF is developing educational and recreational tourist projects, preparing the soil for farming, providing agricultural infrastructure and building reservoirs. Balancing the needs of the people of Israel with the fragile environment of the desert is central to our mission in the Negev.
In Lotan, JNF is currently developing a migratory bird reserve, water recycling system and environmental education center. These projects will both benefit the environment and attract tourists, creating a more concrete economy and encouraging people to come and settle.
In Yahel, a park and recreational center are being built, as well as a reservoir and a coffee house for visitors.
The Arava Institute for Environmental Studies located on Kibbutz Ketura is the
premier environmental academic institution in the Middle East. JNF is actively erecting dormitories and classrooms and sponsoring student scholarships.
Servicing both residents and tourists, the path will encompass some of the region's most favorable attractions, including the Lotan Bird Watching Site and the Arava Institute experimental orchards.
56 years ago, this town had a mere 2,500 population a population many people thought would eventually dwindle away. But today, the town is a thriving metropolitan city of almost 200,000 people. JNF will play a major part in further strengthening this city.
One major program focuses on Nachal Be'er Sheva; an extensive water, environment and economic development project. A massive riverbed that winds from the north end of Be'er Sheva to the south side went dry. Soon, where there once was a dry riverbed, rushing recycled water will bring life to the city and the environment. |
