JEWISH NATIONAL FUND CFO VISITS CHICAGO

Mitch Rosenzweig, JNF Chief Financial Officer, was the featured guest speaker at a recent JNF board meeting held at the downtown offices of Wigoda and Wigoda. JNF directors were treated to an overview of the organization with a detailed focus on all financial aspects of JNF and learned that over the last 10 years JNF has gone from 225 paid staff members down to 150 paid staff members, while increasing its annual revenue collection from $24 million to $56 million. JNF is one of only two Jewish charitable organizations that are positively rated by the Better Business Bureau and for the second year in a row earned a 4 star rating from Charity Navigator, which is the highest rating. JNF spends 83% of revenues on program services - for comparison, only 7-out-of-10 charitable organizations spend more than 75% of revenues on program services. In addition, JNF leads all Jewish charitable agencies in raising funds via the internet, receiving about $2.3 million annually. JNF USA has set a goal of $1.6 million for the Midwest Region for 2008.

UPCOMING MISSIONS:

Israel’s 60th Anniversary Mission: Be part of a global celebration as Jewish communities from around the world gather to celebrate the achievement of Israel's 60th Anniversary. Sign up for our 60th Anniversary Mission coming up May 5-13, 2008. The JNF-USA Mission will combine with individuals from all over the world, including Australia and South Africa. The last three days of the Mission will include participating in the World Leadership Conference.

Queen of Sheba Mission (Women’s Mission): Israel Through Tears and Laughter
A year ago, Tali Tzour, the first female Israeli Emissary to JNF/USA, created this highly unforgettable women only mission. Due to the great success of the mission, JNF will be doing it again this year. In Tali’s words, “join us for a once-in-a-life-time experience...a unique and unforgettable mission for women only - no husbands, no kids, no boyfriends - just us, women experiencing life as our sisters do in Israel. From March 20-29, 2008, we will see and feel Israel in a woman’s way, using all our senses to laugh and cry as we get connected to the land. Get connected to the people. We’ll meet with Israeli women and through them delve into the different angles and aspects of Israeli life. This is going to be an emotional and moving experience.”

For more information on all missions, please contact the Northbrook offices at 847-656-8880.

EDUCATION UPDATE by Marjie Shapiro, JNF Education Chair

The education committee is developing a slide presentation for the "Passport to Israel" program. This new interactive program, originally started by the National Council for Jewish Women, is intended to supplement the City of Chicago's 6th grade curriculum which covers ancient civilizations. The presentation will take the kids from ancient times to modern day Israel, highlighting the similarities between the US and Israel, as well as teaching the kids a bit about the culture, the geography and the technologies developed in Israel that they use everyday. The goal is to present a positive first impression of Israel, encouraging further learning. Of course, the presentation would not be complete without highlighting the Maccabbi Tel Aviv basketball team and the new professional baseball league supported by JNF. Once completed, the committee will be looking for volunteers to help with the presentations. Look for more information in next month's newsletter.
